UK - Drastic Measures Planned to Ease Financial Crisis

Drastic Measures Planned to Ease UK'S Financial Crisis

The UK is facing one of its worse economic struggles for decades, not since the second world war has the country found itself in such dire financial difficulties. The Guardian reports nearly half a million could loose their jobs.

“The news is bad. Nearly half-a-million people could lose their jobs; services on which millions have come to rely will be scaled back or shut completely; it is the tightest overall squeeze on spending since the Second World War.”

Several drastic measures were unveiled this week that the government hopes will turn things around. Are these measures well thought out plans or knee jerk reactions that could result in dire consequences for Britians future.

<!-- -->
“This week announced spending cuts on defence in the UK indicate the scale of the current financial crisis. Even, as a result of the previous Labour regime brought about economic disaster, at the end of 1970's the UK did not have to cut its forces that deep. In 1982 it was still able to mount a successful Falklands campaign. In the height of Conservative induced recession of the early 1990's it was able to provide a significant contribution to the First Gulf War. After the defense budget cuts just announced the British conventional military capability will be reduced to symbolic. Only nuclear deterrent will keep the British position on the UN Security Council not reduced to a rather indefensible remains of a period when Britain was still a power.”

Out Of The Danger Zone

Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron, believes drastic measures are necessary to take the country out of the danger zone, but many fell that the ill conceived plans will prove to be costly and that the financial crisis is reshaping social lives.

<!-- -->
“Due to the scale of the financial pyramid the end to this is not in sight. We are on a slippery slope and any talk about a better future is fooling people”

Sell The Forrest's

Another one of the governments plans to raise much needed money is to sell off half the nations government owned forests, some 374 hectares could be sold off by 2020, making way for private business to build holiday resorts, golf courses and adventure camps.

<!-- -->
“Legislation which currently governs the treatment of "ancient forests" such as the Forest of Dean and Sherwood Forest is likely to be changed giving private firms the right to cut down trees.”
<!-- -->

Unions have vowed to fight the governments plans to sell off the forests. Allan MacKenzie, secretary of the Forestry Commission Trade Unions, said: "We will oppose any land sale. Once we've sold it, it never comes back.

Only time will tell if the government plans will prevail and be a success or go down in history as one of the biggest mistakes in political history.
